COMING SOON TO DIGITAL PLATFORMS

Embark on a journey through the traditional Christian year, entering by way of Advent, visiting major and minor landmarks along the way, culminating in a celebration of Christ the King. On your journey, feast on the riches of hymnody, new and old, locally and globally, following the narrative pathways of the gospel story as outlined in the Revised Common Lectionary. Find nourishment in reflective commentary by living hymn writers, classic hymn writers, and master scholars. Discover more about the hymns and psalm paraphrases by observing their sources, and learn more about the church year through guiding essays.

This book includes nearly 400 hymns for every day of the year (special days have more than one), including 69 metrical psalms, 7 spirituals, the Ten Commandments, Lord’s Prayer, Songs of Mary, Zechariah, Simeon, Hannah, Moses & Miriam, and others. The book is also international in scope, drawing materials from Japan, South Korea, China, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Spain, Germany, Greece, France, and elsewhere.

This publication is a love letter to the edifying properties of hymnody. For those intimately acquainted with the more traditional hymn, this devotional guide offers the opportunity to shed rote recitation for careful contemplation; for the uninitiated, this book is a trove of the nuanced and limitless spiritual insights that the hymns of the ages can provide.

This should be a helpful companion to Scripture for those who love hymns and want to sing their faith all year round.

Sing your way through the Church year! This book is for anyone who loves the rich traditions of Christian hymnody and the liturgical calendar, and is a particular gift to anyone who feels a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of music contained in the average hymnal. Each day’s hymn is coupled with just enough history, music appreciation, and/or devotional reflection to make even the most obscure hymns accessible to the uninitiated. Hymns & Devotions for Daily Worship is a true treasure.
